Dear Butler Class of 2023:
Welcome back to Princeton! Whether you were on campus last spring or not, this is an extraordinary and exciting time at Princeton, as we all adjust to operating at full capacity. As you hopefully know, the non-departmental advising functions for juniors and seniors belong with your residential college, whether you live in Butler or in upperclass housing. Regardless of where you call home on campus, Butler College will therefore remain an important part of your life at Princeton through your graduation. I am still your dean and Joe Rolón (firstname.lastname@example.org), our amazing Director of Student Life, is still your DSL. Please feel free to contact me or Joe and come see us with any concern, and remember that you are always welcome back at Butler. The great Dr. Lazen is also always happy to see you and give you his advice, as is our wonderful Head of College, Professor Elizabeth Armstrong.
Make sure to come in to see me this year for any of the following reasons:
* to change your major or your degree concentration;
* to get an extension on your independent work (JP);
* to get an extension to complete work that is due on Dean's Date;
* if you plan to take a summer course and need preapproval for Princeton degree credit;
* if you are seeking permission to enroll in a graduate course;
* if you are experiencing general academic difficulties and need help.
The Office of the Dean of the College has put together a very helpful Junior Action Plan, and I urge you to click on the link and explore. It has a month-by-month guide to junior year (being updated now to the new calendar), as well as links to many University resources. For advice on course selection in your major, and for advice on fulfilling your departmental requirements and for guidance on independent work, you will be seeing your Director of Undergraduate Studies in your home department. For everyone engaging in independent work, the Office of Undergraduate Research has an extremely helpful website and calendar.
DISTRIBUTION AREA REQUIREMENTS: Please check your degree progress report to see where you stand with respect to the completion of distribution area requirements. Because senior year is a bad time to discover that you need multiple distribution requirements, take a look NOW and let me know if there appears to be a problem. Engineers who discover a problem with their BSE requirements should check with Dean Bogucki immediately. Drop/Add opens on Tigerhub tomorrow morning at 6:30am and ends on Tuesday, September 14th at 11:59pm (remember, September 14th is the last day it is possible to add a class). The full schedule for course selection dates and times can be found here: https://registrar.princeton.edu/student-and-alumni-services/course-selection/undergraduate-course-selection. Be sure to inform your departmental adviser of any changes you are making in your program.
If you are interested in post-graduate fellowship opportunities, Dr. Deirdre Moloney (email@example.com) in Fellowship Advising in the Office of International Programs is your best point of contact.
If you are living in Butler, I look forward to seeing you often around Wu. If you are in upperclass housing, I am very much looking forward to continuing our relationship as you return to the college for meals (remember, you all have two free meals per week, starting September 6th!) Be on the lookout for email announcements about our upperclass social hours and other programs, and please say hello when you see me in the Wu dining hall.
And be sure to stay current with COVID information at https://covid.princeton.edu/.
Please let me know if you have any questions, and always feel free to make an appointment to see me by emailing me or calling Lauren Cutrone in the Butler College Office at 609-258-3474.
Here’s to a great year!
