Senior Welcome Back Letter from Dean Stirk

Sunday, Sep 16, 2018

Dear Butler Class of 2019,

I would like to take a moment and welcome you back for your senior year at Princeton.  I am sure you are looking forward to making this the most memorable year of all, and I want to make certain you are aware that I am here to help.  Whether you live in Butler College or elsewhere on campus, under the four-year residential college advising model I am your Senior Class Dean and you should come to me for any academic matters that are not handled by your department.  These could include advice about non-departmentals, requests for extensions, accessing resources, advice about life after Princeton, or anything else that is on your mind.

There are also four important reminders that I want to convey to you as you begin the semester:

1. DISTRIBUTION AREA REQUIREMENTS: Please check your degree progress report now, at the start of the year, to see where you stand with respect to the completion of distribution area requirements.   As you must complete all of the requirements in order to graduate and as the spring is a bad time to discover that you need, for example, to fulfill a final ST course, take a look NOW and let me know if there appears to be a problem.  Engineers who discover a problem with their BSE requirements should check with Dean Bogucki immediately.

2. SENIOR YEAR COURSE LOAD:   Due to the thesis requirement, seniors have special rules governing their course loadall A.B. seniors must complete a minimum if six courses plus a thesis, regardless of the number of extra courses you may have completed prior to the start of senior year.   A.B. seniors may follow a 3/3 or 4/2 course pattern.   B.S.E. students must complete, at minimum, the equivalent of four courses each term.  (Please note that B.S.E. independent work counts as a course.   A full-year senior thesis, e.g. in CEE, MAE, CHE, or ORFE, that is credited double in the spring may be counted as the equivalent of one course in the fall and another course in the spring.)

3. DROPPING AND ADDING COURSES:  Starting this morning, you can add/drop on TigerHub ( ) for the first two weeks of the term (note: you must still consult with your department about departmental courses).  FOR CHANGES AFTER THE DROP/ADD PERIOD ENDS (TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25th), YOU MUST BRING YOUR PROGRAM CHANGE FORM TO THE COLLEGE OFFICE TO BE REVIEWED AND SIGNED BY YOUR DEAN.  Without a dean’s signature, seniors are blocked from all add/drop activity after the second week of the term.   Please note the last day to add a course is Tuesday, September 25th at 11:59pm.

4. SENIOR YEAR ACTION PLAN:  The Dean of the College website has a very helpful Senior Action Plan site ( that provides great advice, gathers together online campus resources for seniors in one place, and lays out a monthly action plan for the year.   Spend some time there, it will make senior year easier!  Also, be on the lookout for emails from me and announcements about the Butler/Wilson thesis support for upperclassmen later this fall.  If I can help in any way, with any aspect of your senior year planning, please let me know.

Finally, remember – even if you are living in upperclass housing, you are still a Butlerite!   Please feel free to contact me or come see me with any concern, and remember that you are always welcome back to Butler.  We look forward to seeing you back at Wu for your two free upperclass meals per week, at our soon-to-be-announced upperclass social hours, or at the annual Butler/Wilson 5K run, taking place this year this coming Saturday, September 25th at 10:00am.  I look forward to meeting with you the near future, and again, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.

All best,

Dean Stirk
