FIRST YEARS: Spring Course Advising Nov. 19 - Dec. 2

Nov. 2, 2021

Dear Butler First Years,

It’s hard to believe that it’s already time to start thinking about choosing your courses for next semester! Please save this message so that you can refer back.

First-year course selection takes place on Friday, December 3 from 7:30am to 11:59pm.

Between Wednesday, November 10 and December 2 at 3pm, you’ll need to meet with your adviser to approve your courses. If you do not meet with your adviser by December 2nd at 3pm, We will put a hold on your enrollment.  Here are the steps of the advising process:

  1. Make an appointment with your faculty adviser (you must meet with them between Nov 10 and Dec 2)

Schedule your appointment using their preferred method for making appointments (If you are a BSE candidate, you will be receiving more information from SEAS. ) If you have forgotten your adviser’s name, look on TigerHub; it should be listed in your Student Center.

  1. Complete and submit your Academic Planning Form (APF)

Complete your APF (located in TigerHub) and use the Course Planner to create a course queue prior to your scheduled appointment with your adviser. MAKE SURE YOU CLICK SUBMIT!  (See instructions for details.)

  1. Prepare for your meeting with your faculty adviser
    • Consider possible majors and make sure you’re starting to fulfill some prerequisites.
    • Add a distribution requirement. Normally, you should only have a couple left when you enter junior year.
    • Explore!  You might be surprised at what you find under programs like EGR, JRN, DAN, ATL, GSS, or HUM.
    • Attend the Butler-First-Whitman advising fair 10:00-11:00pm on Wednesday, December 1st. Your PAAs and I will be there to answer your last-minute questions and discuss your course choices!
  2.  Meet with your adviser and get electronic approval of your APF form

You must have an advising conversation with your adviser before they will approve your Academic Planning Form.  Be sure to give yourself time to complete your APF BEFORE your advising appointment, and come to your meeting prepared to discuss your general academic plans as well as specific course selections, including some alternates in case courses close.

Your APF will be approved by your adviser electronically via an adviser checkbox following your appointment.  You can verify for yourself that this box has been checked by logging into TigerHub and going to your APF.

The Academic Planning Form must be approved by your AB adviser no later than 3:00pm December 2.

If your adviser has not indicated approval and confirmed that you met by checking the box on the electronic APF, a hold will be placed on your online course enrollment when it begins on Friday, December 3 at 7:30am.

I hope that the rest of the term goes very well for you.  Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns, or if you’d like to talk.

ADDITIONAL NOTE: I should add that, in addition to making an appointment at https://calendly.com/mlazenprinceton/advising-appointments, you can come during drop in hours tomorrow 2:00-3:30 and 4:00-5:00 if you wish to discuss dropping or PDFing a class.

Best,

Dr. Lazen
