Dear Butler Students and Fellows,

We are delighted to let you know that the announcement of the new Head of Butler College will go out to the University community shortly, and that our new Head of College, effective July 1, 2020, will be Professor Elizabeth (Betsy) Armstrong of the Department of Sociology and the Woodrow Wilson School.

Professor Armstrong will bring a wide-ranging familiarity with Princeton's residential college life to her new position, having served, since 2001, as a faculty adviser and fellow in Rockefeller College.

In addition to her appointments in Sociology and the Woodrow Wilson School, Professor Armstrong has affiliations with the Office of Population Research, the Center for Health and Wellbeing, and the Program in Gender and Sexuality Studies. Her academic research and publications focus on the history and sociology of medicine, with a particular interest in ideas concerning risk and reproduction, and the intersection of culture and medicine.  Among the undergraduate classes she teaches at Princeton are courses on the sociology of medicine, maternal and child health policy, and culture and reproduction. She received a B.A. in English from Yale, an M.P.A. from the Woodrow Wilson School, and a Ph.D. in sociology and demography from the University of Pennsylvania.

Professor Armstrong will be moving into the "Butler House" this fall with her 16-year-old daughter, Lilly, and her 11-year-old son, Henry.

The staff of Butler are delighted to hear this news, to be announced to the broader Princeton community very shortly, and we ask that you join with us in congratulating and welcoming Professor Betsy Armstrong to her new position as Head of Butler College!

All best,

David Stirk

Dean of Butler College
