Prof Tarnita’s research is on understanding large scale spatial patterns that can be observed from satellite or aerial imagery. In the photo she’s in a helicopter in Mozambique, flying over Gorongosa National Park, looking at large-scale organization of vegetation and termite nests. This fall she is teaching a freshman seminar (FRS 191 Equations of Life) that will explore how mathematical modeling can reveal unique insights into biological processes. Her advice for students is to make sure they take at least 1-2 courses in an area that is outside their comfort zone.
