Professor Cooney spent this past June in Portugal with a group of Princeton students, directing and teaching in her department's new summer program in Lisbon. In addition to honing linguistic and cultural fluency, their courses examined the relationship between Portugal and its former colonies in Africa and contemporary race and identity politics. Everyone had a fantastic time exploring the many treasures of the enchanting city, and Prof Cooney believes that studying abroad is an absolute must and is glad Princeton offers many opportunities to do so. She encourages students to learn a new language or continue with one they already know.
